2 min read
The Garden Route is known for its gorgeous long stretches of beaches, luscious forests, and stunning mountains. All of these natural areas of course come with their own animals. We’re here to tell you some of the best game reserves for a day trip, as well as sea trips and a special butterfly sanctuary.
Botlierskop Private Game Reserve
Located 30 minutes away from De Bakke Santos, Botlierskop Private Game Reserve offers a variety of activities: guided game drives, horseback safaris, guided bush trails. If you are looking for some relaxation, head over to the Fijnebos Spa for some proper TLC. Botlierskop is also highly focused on conservation of both the environment and wildlife and has partnered with the African Wildlife Conservation Foundation to enhance their conservation projects.
Garden Route Game Lodge
Garden Route Game Lodge is situated near Albertinia and is home to South Africa’s Big 5, as well as the cheetah, giraffe, antelopes, and smaller mammal species. The lodge offers guided game drives and walks, mountain biking, birdwatching, picnics, sundowners, and a spa. The lodge is malaria-free and family orientated.
Indalu Game Reserve
Indalu Game Reserve is easy to reach, being located halfway between Albertinia and Mossel Bay. The reserve offers game drives, both at sunrise and sunset, but are known for their elephant walks and interactions in the elephants’ natural environment. Indalu, which is derived from the isiXhosa word for “nature”, is also home to 4 of the Big 5 and 8 different antelope species. The reserve offers a great learning opportunity for school groups.
Romonza Boat Trips
Romonza Boat Trips have been operating for over 25 years and can be found in the Mossel Bay harbour. They offer you a chance to experience the sea life in and around Mossel Bay at a closer look. Take a trip to seal island which is home to over 4000 seals – this runs all year round. Or perhaps a relaxed sunset cruise is more to your liking. Lastly, Romonza offers boat-based whale watching from July to November.
The Western Cape Butterfly Sanctuary
Ruiterbosch Lodge is home to the newly opened Western Cape Butterfly Sanctuary. Born during the 2020 lockdown, the sanctuary is home to endangered species of butterflies, as well as disabled butterflies. They are open Tuesdays to Sundays and have guided tours between 10:30 and 14:30 hourly every day.
