Diaz Strand is a quick 7-minute drive away. The area is named after Bartolomeu Dias, a Portuguese seafarer, who arrived in Mossel Bay in 1488. If you would like to find out more about Dias and the history of Mossel Bay, you can read our blog about it here, and don’t forget to visit the Dias Museum Complex!

Diaz Strand is known for its long strip of beach that is absolutely packed in the summer. Whether you are tanning, swimming, or surfing, the warm golden sand and relaxing waves will be calling your name. The beachfront often has stalls and vendors ready with local food, trinkets, accessories, and all your beach needs!

Diaz Water Park has been providing fun and excitement for everyone, young and old, since 1982. This is the perfect place for the kids to let loose in a safe environment, while the rest of the family can relax and have a drink or partake in the entertainment as well! With a variety of rides providing adrenaline fuel, you are guaranteed to have a blast. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen!

Hartenbos is a little bit further away, being accessible with a 15-minute drive. The holiday resort started off as a farm in 1730, owned by farmer Esaias Meyer. Meyer was gifted the farm by the Dutch East India Company after helping shipwrecked sailors. He called the farm ‘Hart en Bosch’ (deer and bush). In 1933, South African Railways and Harbours bought the farm and transformed it into a holiday resort for their employees. The Afrikaanse Taal en Kultuurvereniging (‘the Afrikaans Language and Cultural Society’) bought the resort in 1936 and expanded it into present-day Hartenbos.

Hartenbos is an incredibly popular holiday destination on the Garden Route, with people making the trip every year from all over. Hartenbos boasts a lovely beach, with a small shopping mall and restaurants on the beachfront. The Hartenbos River also runs alongside the village.

Hartenbos has many activities that draw people there. A waterpark with three new slides, a heated pool, and an outside pool cover all of your water-fun needs. There are two adventure golf courses and a jungle gym for kids. The town often has flea markets and stalls to buy gifts, food, art, and trinkets from. It’s an excellent day trip from De Bakke Santos and is close enough that you don’t have to worry about traffic or arriving home after dark!

We are so lucky to have Diaz Strand and Hartenbos as neighbours, and we hope you take some time while staying with us to visit these destinations!
